Our first academic conference presentation
A busy week for Triumf Health in Montreal? Yes, according to our very own ambassador Riin who gave her first poster presentation at an academic conference. Check her post out!
If you have been following our Facebook page, you are possibly aware that our short paper (warning for the length of the paper and conference names) „The Development of Digital Health Intervention for Reducing Psychological Problems in Chronically Ill Children" got accepted to the Symposium on Computing and Mental Health being part of CHI2018 conference (ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems). The conference and the symposium took place in the end of April in Montreal.
There were more than 60 participants altogether attending the symposium which consisted of keynotes, poster sessions, a design exercise, short overviews of articles submitted to the JMIR special issue find previous year’s issue here and a panel discussion about the ethical aspects of computing in mental health. Interesting topics were discussed, including, for example, the challenge of engaging service providers to use new technology and how we should think about the indirect users in user-centered design, emotional analytics and statistical models in order to recommend how to moderate or regulate one’s mood with the aim of improving self-regulation and the importance of data privacy and coverage of the net impact of new solutions in academic papers.
We presented a poster of our short paper, as well met a bunch of awesome people working in the field of computing and mental health developing technologies to help reduce mental distress. As we already took a long travel from Helsinki to beautiful Montreal, we were also eager to learn what CHI2018 conference has to offer (and met a bunch of cool people there as well or actually, already on the plane on our way to Montreal!). The field of CHI is very broad and the conference covered a lot of the field's aspects! In addition to paper sessions, there were demos, courses, roundtables and so on. If you are interested in or already working in the field of human-computer interaction, we recommend you to check out the various topics of this year’s conference or take a look at the next year’s one taking place in Glasgow.
As our short paper was a proposal for the study that we are going to conduct starting from this summer, our next step is to make the study happen and write about its outcomes for the next year’s JMIR special edition. We will keep you posted, so stay tuned!
