How can adults encourage children to engage in mental health?

Mental health disorders among children can develop in a number of ways. Some children may be born with a genetic predisposition to mental health disorders, which can make them more vulnerable to developing these conditions. Environmental factors, such as exposure to traumatic events or a history of abuse, can also increase the risk of developing mental health disorders. Additionally, certain life events, such as the loss of a loved one or a major change in circumstances, can trigger the development of mental health disorders in some children. The exact cause of mental health disorders in children is often complex and can involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and other factors.

How can we promote mental health among children?

  • Talk openly about mental health: It's important to have open and honest conversations with children about mental health, and to let them know that it's okay to talk about their feelings and emotions.

  • Encourage healthy coping skills: Help children identify healthy coping strategies, such as talking to a trusted adult, engaging in physical activity, or practicing mindfulness, to help manage their emotions and stress.

  • Model good self-care: Children learn by example, so it's important for adults to model good self-care, such as eating well, getting enough sleep, and managing stress, to help children develop healthy habits.

  • Encourage open communication: Encourage children to talk openly and honestly about their feelings and emotions, and to reach out for support if they need it.

  • Provide support and guidance: Offer support and guidance to children when they are struggling with mental health issues, and encourage them to seek help if needed.

  • Help children set goals: Help children set goals for their mental health, such as reducing stress or improving their mood, and provide support and guidance to help them achieve those goals.

  • Promote positive self-esteem: Help children develop a positive self-image and self-esteem by praising their accomplishments and encouraging them to be proud of who they are.

  • Encourage regular physical activity: Physical activity can have many mental health benefits, so encourage children to engage in regular exercise and other physical activities.

  • Use available evidence-based mental health tools such as Triumfland Saga Android or iOS for children to use independently and discuss in a safe environment.
